2011 has been an encouraging year for advancements in MND research. Recently Sydney hosted the International Symposium for MND Research with over 650 delegates from 33 countries coming together to share research and ideas. MND is not incurable, but the leading researchers need to be continually funded to advance their work.

On Saturday 3rd December Muay Thai kickboxers, Brett Zanchetta and Justin Galt came out of retirement to join the fight against MND. An incredible $23,000 was raised on the night for the MND and Me Foundation. On Sunday October 16th, 2011, One Million Metres was swum at Langlands Pool for MND. The event was the brainchild of the Masters swim squad at Langlands and in total over $180,000 was raised for the MND and Me Foundation. A massive thank you to the organisers, the volunteers, the swimmers and all supporters. A special mention to the event’s ambassadors, Jess Schipper and Susie O’Neill for their support as well. How much is facial hair worth? Well if you’ve had it for over 30yrs then it’s worth over $14,000. Bruce, Trevor and Peter from Suncorp Bank each shaved off their long-standing facial hair on the 7th September 2011 to raise money for the MND and Me Foundation. Thanks so much to the guys and their supporters, incredible gesture and you all look very handsome as well!

A big thank you to our team of “MND and Me” runners who participated in the Gold Coast Marathon event on 2/3rd July 2011. We had teams enter the 10km event, the half marathon and the full marathon under the banner of the MND and Me Foundation. On the 16th July, 2011 we had a MND and Me team participate in the grueling 96km Kokoda Challenge through the rugged Gold Coast Hinterland. The team completed the non-stop trek in just under 30hrs and in the process raised over $8,000 for the MND and Me Foundation. What an incredible effort.
