On 22 October 2010 I was told that I have a disease for which there is no known cause, no known cure and no effective treatment. That disease in Motor Neurone Disease and my life expectancy is 3-5 yrs.

I am a 39yr old father of two and I am running in the 2011 Gold Coast Half Marathon in support of all my fellow Australians living with MND.

The unpredictable nature of this disease means that I might not make it. But I’m certainly going to give it my best !! Please sponsor me and help those living with MND.

When I first started running at the end of last year, I could barely run 500 metres. Scott Sullivan’s story has inspired me to run the Gold Coast Half Marathon to raise awareness of Motor Neurone Disease and the MND and Me Foundation. The training is on track and whilst the Half Marathon will be challenging, the thought of being able to raise some funds for the MND and Me Foundation, is all the motivation I need.

One of my goals this year was to complete a 10km run and my best friend has convinced me to register for the run on the Gold Coast in July. This will be the longest I have ever run so I am a little concerned about the distance… but with my best friend coming all the way from Melbourne to run it with me…. I have no excuses! Then I read about Scott’s courage in attempting the half marathon… and thought if I could raise just a little bit of money to help families impacted by MND it would make the run more worthwhile. Why would I want to get up early on a Sunday morning and run 21km with 20,000 other people? Sometimes I ask myself the same thing but I really do know the answer – because I love it!!!

This year I have an even better reason to run the Gold Coast Half Marathon on July 3rd – to raise money for the charity MND & Me.

2 years ago Sarah Sullivan was one of the runners in my group and we ran the Gold Coast Half Marathon. Sarah is a friend of a friend. Sarah’s husband Scott also works for the same company I do. Small world.

Last October Scott was diagnosed with MND. His inspiration is truly amazing and if I can have fun running this event and raise some money for his charity in the process then it’s a good day for all. I won’t be running a world class time but I will be trying my best!

Last year I watched the Gold Coast Marathon and I was inspired to run it myself this year. Supporting Scott and MND will keep me going all the way to the finish line (hopefully!)
